Working for Luck

I just turned to see snow falling outside the office window.  This winter has been a relatively warm one so far.  Rain and more rain has fallen in the past couple days, so the snow is something new.  In my first couple years at SRU, it seemed like a blizzard hit at the start of each spring semester.  Although last year was relatively timid, I expect that this winter is holding out until mid-February or March to begin to truly layer the white fluffy cold upon us.

With the start of the new semester I have made some changes.  Already, my emphasis on classes is improved.  I think that I am carrying forth my studious nature from the fall.  I am a great believer in luck.  I find the harder I work the more I have of it, and after my grades last semester, I was lucky enough to see all my hard work come to fruition.  To assist in continuing my trend of improving grades, I have decided to drop my position as Commuter Senator in the Student Government Association.  I wasn’t finding it enjoyable at the end of last semester, and it was starting to become an unnecessary burden on me around finals week.  I am hoping that the additional time will reduce my stress levels at that critical point in late April.

Currently, I have 15 credit hours which is one class below the maximum of 18 (unless you apply for excess hours). Most regular courses are three credit hours.  Some exceptions include science labs, internships, and the computer competency course.  All of the classes I have left to take are major-related courses in the Safety Management program, so I am learning all the things that are directly related to what I could do as a professional. After this semester, I have to do a summer internship and three classes in the fall.  I have been nervous about the internship for a couple months now.  I had to turn-in the initial paperwork today, and I still haven’t received a single phone call or email about interviews.  I’m worried that I won’t be able to find a good internship in time.  Hopefully in the next week or so I will have some more luck finding a company that I could be of service to this summer.

Best of luck,

Chris Kite
